EditByBSEditor: This program is a very simple (and inefficient) puzzle solver for the popular numerical puzzles currently to be found in The Times newspaper.
The Times Su Doku Book 1 suggests that Su Doku, roughly translating as 'Number Place', is as popular in Japan as crosswords are in Britain. It may be that the format evolved from a simpler version created by the 18th-century Swiss mathematician, Euler.
Su Doku puzzles were brought from Tokyo to The Times by Wayne Gould, a former Hong Kong judge.
The puzzle first appeard in The Times on the front cover of T2 on 12th November 2004, and has become extremely popular.
This Su Doku puzzle-solver was produced with the help of The Times Su Doku Book 1, The Utterly Addictive Number-Placing Puzzle.
